Alternative Rock band Fear Without Reason from the UK, have recently released the new single "Broken", we asked vocalist Zaz and gutarist Ste a few questions about the new release.
Hallo. First of I would like to congratulate you on your new single. Could you start out by introducing yourself and tell us what part in the band you have?
Thank you! I’m Zaz, Vocalist in Fear Without Reason, and I’m Ste Roberts, Guitarist.
Why did you choose this title for the single?
(Z) Broken is my interpretation of a true story of a drunk driver that killed his daughter in a car crash, I heard the story on the radio and it resonated with me deeply. I like to write stories in songs and I really wanted to tackle this in my own way.
When did you start working on this single, how long did the process take from the first step to the final product?
(SR) This single actually took a long time to come together as a package - we wanted to come out with a single, video and promotion all at once which is new ground for us as a band, particularly as this is the first real release involving all 5 of the current lineup and the change of direction it brought with it.
Where did you record the single, and who produced it? How did the cooperation go between the band and the producer?
(SR) The single was recorded at Univibe Audio in Birmingham with Dan Willett, we love him, he is our sixth Beatle! The reason we go back is we work so well together musically and he knows how to get our ideas to come to life and also his awesome knowledge on a technical engineering side completes the package.
Are you trying to express something through your music?
(Z) I like to write stories and the music has to have feeling. As a band, mental health is so important to all of us, we’ve all either suffered from issues like anxiety or depression, or our family members have, we think this comes through in our music. (SR) I think it works when I can feel a certain way as I play a riff on the guitar and Zaz can pick up on that sound and craft lyrics that fit the mood perfectly.
The single was released early september, how has the new material been received from the fans so far?
(Z) We’re lucky that fans have really been loving the direction we are headed, they want to hear more and we are hyped to be working on more things to bring to them, and hopefully make new fans along the way.
Who did the artwork and what is the idea behind it?
(Z) Lewis at Tunnel Vision art sorted it out for us, I went to him with my ideas and what came out was great.
How would you compare the material on this release to your previous material?
(SR) From Monica onwards we think our sound has matured, we are introducing heavier elements and still keeping the ‘FWR’ sound and the dynamic energy we bring to it. (Z) Bringing new members onboard - Rich and Phil has really energised our writing, we can’t wait to see where it goes.
What kind of stuff did you grow up listening to, and what kind new music do you listen to these days?
(Z) First album I ever bought was Nirvana - In Utero, it along with Kurt Cobain really inspired me. I listen to pretty much anything but lately I’ve been really into Thrice. Their new album is immense! (SR) I think my dad got me into rock with Meat Loaf! Lately I’ve been listening to a newer band called Dream State, they are so cool, and I think they are a fairly new breakthrough, hopefully we can follow in their footsteps.
Have any of these bands been source of inspiration for the single?
(SR) I think we don’t go out to say we’re inspired by anyone in particular but listening to lots of music and having everyone in the band bring ideas into the mix is important. We write together as a band, no one person controls all the bits so we think that helps us be us.
In your time as musicians, what is your biggest musical achievement so far and what has been your biggest experience through the years?
(Z) Hopefully this is just the start of our journey but headlining Cannock in September to our hometown crowd and having them sing the songs back to us was amazing.
Could we expect any European tour and maybe see the band in action here in Denmark any time soon?
(SR) We’d love to play Denmark! Unfortunately we are just starting to grow at home in the UK so hopefully that goes well and we can get to Europe really soon.
What would be the ultimate tour, festival or show for you to play at?
(Z) Leeds festival, it was the first festival Me, Ste and Andy (Drums) attended and we said all those years ago we want to be on that stage one day.
Do you have any breaking news with the bands?
(SR) Nothing to announce specifically right now but the date is in the calendar for us to go into the studio to start the follow up single to Broken.
That’s all we’ve get this time, do you have anything that you'd like to add or say?
(Z) Thanks so much for your time and everyone else for checking us out. We are trying to grow as a band and get more fans and create a community all at once. It’s hard work but we love it and we hope you’ll join us.
We would like to say thanks a lot for your time. And we wish all you guys all the luck in the future whatever it might bring.
