Sandberg - Interview with Kim Sandberg

Sandberg - Interview with Kim Sandberg

Sandberg is the new aspiring hard rock band in Trondheim, Norway, formed in 2016. And with their unique sound of fusion elements from EDM to blues, they are now ready to release their second album "Monster" on Mighty Music 18th of May. We asked the mainman and vocalist Kim Sandberg a few questions about "Monster".

Hallo. First of I would like to congratulate you on your new album. Could you start out by introducing yourself and tell us what part in the band you have?

Kim: Heey dude, and thank you so much.

My name is Kim Sandberg, just a simple man from the little town Skogn in Norway. I’m actually the founder of the band, a project I started in 2014 as a part of my own therapy. Instead of keeping all the dark thoughts inside I started to write it all down as lyrics and small pieces of music, and with a lot of help from my good friend Watterud, it developed into complete songs.

So, what part do I have in the band besides the songwriting? Well… hehe… I do what I think I do best, make as much noise through my throat as possible, and I think people is calling it a vocalist.

Why did you choose this title for the record?

Kim: As I said in the introduction I’ve been through some heavy stuff during my life. I’ve always thought that I’ve been the monster, and somehow, I’m using this album to convince myself that I’m not the monster, but that the monster is living inside of me and have been controlling my life and thoughts through years.

When did you start working on this album, how long did the process take from the first step to the final product? Was it hard to write new material for this record or did it come naturally for you?

Kim: We started working on this new album during the autumn 2016, but the final product wasn’t finished before November 2017. So, I can’t lie and tell you that it has been easy, it’s never easy. A lot of people think that music is created in minutes, no matter what genre, but it’s in fact a shitload of work and feelings mixed together in this big cauldron. But I’ll tell you, no matter how hard it is, it always feels natural doing the thing you love and believe in.

Where did you record the album, and who produced it? How did the cooperation go between the band and the producer?

Kim: The album was recorded, mixed and produced in Skarp Studio by the one and only Jon Tore Dombu. It’s always a pleasure working with this talented producer and musician, and the cooperation couldn’t be better! I’ll recommend everybody who’s considering recordings or other work in studio they may need help with to contact this open-minded man.

Are you trying to express something through your music?

Kim: As I said earlier I do this as a part of my own therapy, and I really hope some people might recognize themselves through our music. Life can be harsh. It’s like a never-ending roller coaster where love and hate cross each other’s path every single day.

Hopefully our songs and lyrics can help others in one way or another through this unreliable world. You’re not alone. wherever you are in life and whatever you’re going through, there is always someone out there walking the same lonely path as you are.

Since we are closing in on the release date of the album, how has the response from the press been?

Kim: The response has been overwhelming man. Since the beginning of the project we’ve never expected anything and done exactly what we’ve wanted to do. What happens, happens anyway! Things are getting a lot easier without all the pressure on your shoulders.

But I can’t lie… it’s always an amazing feeling when reviews and feedback are like they’ve been on this album! It tells us that… hmm… maybe we’ve done something right? Hehe, people actually like what we’ve been doing!

You've already released the first song online for your fans to hear, how has the new material been received from the fans so far?

Kim: People are fantastic! Every single day since the release of our first single Circle Of Anger, people have been texting, commented and called us, and it has been all positive. The problem is that everything is going so fast, and it’s a lot happening, so sometimes you just have to breathe a couple of times, take a look around and let all the impressions sink in. We’re so grateful that people use some of their precious time to listen to our music, and that they actually like what they hear. It’s fantastic!

Who did the artwork and what is the idea behind it?

Kim: The artwork is created by the fantastic graphic designer Bernt Kulseth. He’s been doing all our artwork since 2016, and somehow, he always creates something pulled right out from my own head based on some lyrics, stories and ideas.

How would you compare the material on this release to your previous material?

Kim: Hmm... many of the thoughts, ideas and stories are much of the same. We didn’t want to change too much cause we felt that we in one way or another was following the right path. The biggest difference is that the songs on the upcoming album Monster, is following more of the same common thread than they did on the previous album.

What kind of stuff did you grow up listening to, and what kind new music do you listen to these days?

Kim: Hehehe… it all started with Elvis, but in the end of primary school it all started to change. I was introduced to Guns N’ Roses and hard rock was suddenly a big part of my life.

During junior high I started listening to Sepultura, Pantera, Metallica and a bunch other metal bands, and I never looked back. I’m very curious and love to check out new music, but I’ve been a big fan of Lamb Of God and Gojira the last past years.

Have any of these bands been source of inspiration for the album?

Kim: Hell yeah! Every band, every artist, whether we’re talking about music, art, sports, friends and so on, get inspiration from others. That’s just the way it’s. It’s all about using all that inspiration, whether it’s good or bad, and start to build something on your own with your own hands.

In your time as musicians, what is your biggest musical achievement so far and what has been your biggest experience through the years?

Kim: It’s no doubt. The making our first album Higher Than The Sun. This album is such an important part of my life, and I doubt I’ve been here talking to you without it.

Could we expect any European tour and maybe see the band in action here in Denmark any time soon?

Kim: Hopefully! Right now, it’s still all about the release in May, but we hope we’ll play some gigs in Norway during this summer and autumn. And you never know my friend….. suddenly we’re on the stage somewhere else in Europe as well.

What would be the ultimate tour, festival or show for you to play at?

Kim: Ohh!! My ultimate tour would be visiting all the states in US. Maybe a stadium tour or something like that….wow… that would be amazing, and maybe one of my biggest dreams.

Rock Am Ring would be the ultimate festival. A lot of great music, and a lot of crazy people… hehe.

Do you have any breaking news with the bands?

Kim: Yeah… don’t tell anyone, but we’ve started working on our third album. We’ve got a lot of material, and our guitarist Watterud, is sending me new demos every single day…. haha… that crazy bastard! But I love him anyhow, and he’s always surprising me with all his ideas.

That's all we've get this time, do you have anything that you'd like to add or say?

Kim: Yes please. And if I might? I want to thank every single person that has been a part of this journey. Specially my friends and fantastic musicians in the band Andreas Nergard, Jon Tore Dombu and Tom Erik Watterud. And of course, my very, very patient girlfriend and family. And at last but not least Mighty Music! I’m so grateful!! Thanks!

We would like to say thanks a lot for your time. And we wish all you guys all the luck in the future whatever it might bring.

Kim: Thank you so much and right back at you. It’s been a pleasure!
