Up and coming modern progressive metal outfit Novelists are releasing their debut album “Souvenirs” on Friday, November 6th, on Arising Empire/Nuclear Blast. We asked bassist Nicolas Delestrade a few questions about the band and the new album.

Hallo. First of I would like to congratulate you on your new album. Could you start out by introducing your self and tell us what part in the band you have?

Nicolas: I'm Nick, I play bass in the band!

Why did you choose this title for the record, does it have any special meaning?

Nicolas: There is a whole concept musically around that album which is the memory, we were trying to find a good name for the record, and one of us came up with the idea of "souvenirs" which means the same thing in english and french, we all thought it was a great idea and that the name would fit the album perfectly!

When you started working on this album, how long did the process take from the first step to the final product? Was it hard to write new material for this record or did it come naturally for you?

Nicolas: We started working on the record since the beginning of the band 2 years and a half ago, it's been a very long process, we finished exporting the masters 3 months ago so i would say 2 years in total! We tried to keep it as natural as possible to avoid having the feeling that the songs are rushed.

Where did you record the album, and who produced it?

Nicolas: Amael and I did the whole record in our own NDSE Recording studios in Berlin and Paris. He handled most of the recording part and then sent everything to me, I mixed and mastered the album and sent it to the guys, they then sent me their feedback and we worked on the corrections until everyone was happy about it!

Are you trying to express something through your music?

Nicolas: Not really, we're trying to write music that brings us as much emotion and excitement as we can.

How has the album been received by the press, the critics and the fans so far?

Nicolas: So far the response has been amazing and we are relly happy every single comment and feedback we get about it. We have a truly loyal fanbase that has been waiting for this album for the past few years, I think they just can’t wait to hear the full album.

Who did the artwork and what is the idea behind it?

Nicolas: All the artwork has been done by our guitarist Charly, who also designs all our Merchandise. We all brought our ideas in, and he created the artwork out of it. The empty room represents a hollow mind, trying to remember a memory ( what's through the window), the paper has been ripped to represent the difficulties to put all the informations back together as one piece of coherent memory!

How would you compare the material on this release to your previous material?

Nicolas: I feel like it's just a natural evolution from our past releases, we're not trying to go in any direction, we just do it very naturally and see where it brings us in the end.

What kind of stuff did you grow up listening to, and what kind new music do you listen to these days?

Nicolas: I personally grew up listening to Blink 182, Deftones, UnderOath etc... nowadays I listen to Pvris a lot, Beartooth, Intervals. The guys listen to a lot of different things, from rap music to pop, jazz and more!

Have any of these bands been source of inspiration for the album?

Nicolas: Periphery has been a big source of inspiration at the very beginning of the band, it has change now I think Flo is more influenced by bands such as Monumets, Tesseract..

In your time as musicians, what is your biggest musical achievement so far?

Nicolas: Signing on a huge label such as Arising Empire/Nuclear Blast in such a short time, we would have never dreamt of that 2 years ago!

Could we expect any European tour and maybe see the band in action here in Denmark any time soon?

Nicolas: We're planning a headline run in march and would love to play as many shows as we can! We've toured Germany a lot and Denmark is not too far so i'm sure it'll happen eventually.

What would be the ultimate tour, festival or show for you to play at?

Nicolas: Architects,Periphery, Monuments, and Novelists! that would be an amazing tour!

Do you have any breaking news with the bands?

Nicolas: We are writing the second album already and it's shaping up to be very different from "Souvenirs"

That’s all we’ve get this time, do you have anything that you'd like to add or say?

Nicolas: Thank you for taking the time to read this interview, check out our debut record
"Souvenirs" out November the 6th via Arising Empire!

We would like to say thanks a lot for your time. And we wish all you guys all the luck in the future whatever it might bring.
